AP Credit

Students with a score of 3 automatically receive credit for 201. Those with a score of 4 receive credit for 202, and those with a score of 5 receive credit for 304. Students who continue their language study at ��ר�� can receive credit for the courses they placed out of by completing the next course in the sequence with a grade of C- or better. In the case of a student with a score of 5, any 300-level course will fulfill this purpose.

CLEP Credit

Students can take a CLEP test in French, German or Spanish. In most cases, however, is a more attractive alternative. The credit recommendations on the CLEP form are not those that ��ר�� observes. A student who meets the lower cutoff may receive credit for one course by successfully completing either 201 or 202 with a grade of B- or better. The WebCAPE is recommended for more exact placement. A student who meets the higher cutoff may receive credit for two courses after completing an upper-level course with a grade of B- or better. No sub/waiver form is necessary.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Credit

Students who score 5 or higher in French, German, or Spanish on the subsidiary level of the IB exam automatically receive credit for 201. Students who continue their language study at ��ר�� can receive credit for 101 and 102 in that language by completing 202 and receiving a grade of C- or better.

Students who score 5 or higher on the higher level of the IB exam automatically receive credit for 201 and 202. Students who continue their language study at ��ר�� can receive credit for 101 and 102 by completing a 300-level course in that language with a grade of C- or better.

The Pre-College Foreign Language Entrance Requirement

��ר�� has extended the state requirement to include all in-state and out-of-state students graduating from high school in the spring of 2004 or later. To be admitted without a deficiency these students must have completed two years of foreign language or American sign language or else have had this requirement waived due to a learning disability.

Students with a deficiency must take a 101 language course. This course removes the deficiency, counts toward graduation, and counts as one of two required courses in the Culture and Creativity category of the Foundation of Knowledge.

Departmental Requirements and the Foundation of Knowledge

Individual majors may include language requirements. Students with questions about language requirements for a specific major should consult the appropriate department chair.

Foreign languages are included in the Foundation of Knowledge under Culture and Creativity. Only 101 language courses are listed. With AP, IB and CLEP credit, the student always has to take at least one additional course to receive retroactive credit for the 101 level. Effective with the 2010-2011 catalog, students participating in the World Language Incentive Program receive credit for 101 upon completing an additional course at the 102 level or higher with a grade of C- or better.
